Outrun the Eagles
'Outrun the Eagles' was my first release for Valor studios. It features Franz Stigler of the Me262 equipped Jv44 during an April 1945 mission to attack US bomber formations. Facing a wall of American fighter escorts, he had to make a speedy escape at zero feet over farmland near the river Danube while being pursued by 20th fg P-51 Mustangs.
Stigler's account references that he was so low he could see the farmer's astonished faces as he tore past with his Jumo engines setting light to the hay they'd been putting out for their live stock. He was in fact able to escape his pursuers, although his daring escape probably took a couple of years off of him, the farmers and some terrified cows!
Oil on canvas, 100cm x 50cm.
